BLAIR CLAIMS 'VICTORY' OVER CONSTITUTION HE DIDN'T WANT

Tony Blair has made a statement in the House of Commons on the outcome of the negotiations over an EU Constitution.

Reacting to the Prime Minister's statement, DM campaign director Marc Glendening said:

"Tony Blair didn't even want a legally binding EU Constitution in the first place, so it's absurd for him to now come back and claim that saving an ever-dwindling number of areas from EU interference is some sort of victory.

"Blair's fooling no-one. The EU has gained powers in many new areas, the fundamental nature of the EU has been changed, its legal supremacy over its member states has been formally established and its undemocratic structure has been set in stone.

"Blatantly ignoring the wishes of the people and centralising ever more power in remote institutions that cannot be held to any meaningful account is a recipe for instability and the re-emergence of extremism on our continent."

NOTES:

  1. In a speech in Warsaw on 6th October 2000, Tony Blair said:

"A constitutional debate must not necessarily end with a single, legally binding document called a Constitution... What I think is both desirable and realistic is to draw up a statement of principles... This Statement of Principles would be a political, not a legal document."
