New
campaign demands cuts to spending on the EU Every day Britain pays £20.8 million more to the EU than we receive back in grants and subsidies. That's £7.6 billion (net) being given to the EU this year alone, at a time when public services are being cut and taxes increased in order to pay off Britain's debts. In a recent speech, our new Prime Minister, David Cameron, described the task of cutting Britain's "massive deficit and our growing debt" as "the most urgent issue facing Britain today". As
a result, the coalition government's first Budget announced that VAT
will rise to 20% from January 2011 and that almost all government departments
face spending cuts of up to 40%. Worse, the EU will continue to enjoy spending huge sums of public money from Britain despite auditors repeatedly questioning the "legality and regularity" of large areas of the EU's accounts and regular reports of waste and fraud. That's
why the DM and the TaxPayers' Alliance have teamed up to launch a new
campaign. If public services face severe cuts, it is only fair that
the billions we hand over to the EU should also be cut ...
The Democracy Movement is a non-party pressure group to defend liberal democracy in Britain and across Europe. We believe that this is being fundamentally undermined by the single currency, the EU Constitution / Lisbon Treaty, and the drive to create a Brussels-based system of government in which all major decisions are taken at the EU centre by undemocratic institutions.
